U psów ze zdiagnozowaną nadwrażliwością pokarmową karmy bytowe stosowane są niekiedy zamiennie z hipoalergicznymi produktami weterynaryjnymi. Zyskały one popularność dzięki niższej cenie i skuteczności w zapobieganiu występowania niepożądanych reakcji na pokarm u psów, przy stosowaniu żywienia eliminacyjnego. Jednak powtarzające się przypadki nieefektywnej terapii, opartej na podawaniu karm bytowych, oraz dostępna literatura wskazują, że stosowanie tego rodzaju produktów może okazać się nieskuteczne ze względu na obecność w składzie niezadeklarowanych źródeł białka.

Abstract
OTC (over-the-counter) diets are sometimes used interchangeably with hypoallergenic veterinary diets in dogs diagnosed with food hypersensitivity. They have gained popularity due to the lower price and effectiveness in preventing the occurrence of adverse food reactions in dogs, through the use of an elimination diet. However, recurrent cases of ineffective therapy based on the administration of OTC diets and available literature indicate that the use of such products may prove ineffective due to the presence of undeclared protein sources.
