Biomarkerami określamy wskaźniki fizjologicznych i patologicznych procesów zachodzących w żywych organizmach. W kardiologii weterynaryjnej najczęściej wykorzystywanymi markerami są troponiny sercowe oraz peptydy natriuretyczne, zwłaszcza NT-proBNP. W ostatnich latach zarówno w medycynie człowieka, jak i weterynaryjnej prowadzone są liczne badania mające na celu skuteczniejsze użycie znanych już markerów oraz zdefiniowanie i wykorzystanie nowych biomarkerów, które mogą być przydatne w diagnostyce i ocenie zaawansowania niewydolności serca u psów i kotów.

Abstract
Biomarkers are indicators of physiological and pathological processes occurring in living organisms. Cardiac troponins and natriuretic peptides, especially NT-proBNP, are the most commonly used markers in veterinary cardiology. In recent years, numerous studies have been carried out in both human and veterinary medicine aimed at a more effective use of the already known markers and the definition and use of new biomarkers that may be useful in the diagnosis and assessment of the advancement of heart failure in dogs and cats.
