Węglowodany są jedną z siedmiu podstawowych grup składników odżywczych, których organizmy żywe potrzebują, by przetrwać, zachować zdrowie, rosnąć i rozwijać się.
Powszechnie przyjmuje się, że energia to, zaraz po wodzie, najbardziej niezbędny „nie-składnik” odżywczy diety. Jest pozyskiwana z tłuszczów, białek i węglowodanów strawnych (czyli skrobi). Zarówno psy, jak i koty trawią i metabolizują niektóre rodzaje węglowodanów (przede wszystkim skrobię), szczególnie po poddaniu ich odpowiedniej obróbce termicznej.
Jak się wydaje, zagadnieniem obiektywnie godnym zwrócenia uwagi powinna być nie sama obecność bądź brak skrobi w karmach dla psów, a raczej jej ogólny udział wraz z jakością składników, które jej dostarczają. Zarówno psy, jak i stricte mięsożerne koty wykorzystują skrobię jako źródło glukozy. Produkty metabolizmu skrobi mogą także stanowić substraty dla syntezy innych związków odżywczych.
Niemniej jednak należy wyraźnie zaznaczyć, że węglowodany nie są klasyfikowane jako niezbędne, czyli takie, które muszą być obecne w diecie, by zaspokoić zapotrzebowanie pokarmowe psów.
