Dermatofity to wszechobecne, keratynofilne i nitkowate grzyby. Infekują one skórę, włosy i pazury. Stanowią poważny problem ze względu na swój potencjał zoonotyczny (de Matos i Kalivoda, 2013). Według National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI, Bethesda, Maryland, USA) są one obecnie klasyfikowane do dziewięciu rodzajów (w tym Microsporum, Trichophyton i Arthroderma) (Schoch et al., 2020).
Głównymi przyczynami grzybic skóry u zwierząt, a zwłaszcza u psów i kotów, są Microsporum spp. i Trichophyton spp. (Paryuni et al., 2020). U małych ssaków grzyby skórne z kompleksu Trichophyton benhamiae (kilka gatunków antropofilnych i zoofilnych), głównie Trichophyton (T.) benhamiae, rzadziej Microsporum (M.) canis lub inne gatunki (tab. 1), powodują tak zwaną grzybicę skóry (Fréalle et al., 2007, ESCAPP, 2021).
Prawidłowa klasyfikacja jest dość skomplikowana, ponieważ pierwotnie T. benhamiae został sklasyfikowany zgodnie z kryteriami morfologicznymi, takimi jak zachowanie wzrostu, fenotyp (żółty/biały) i wygląd mikroskopowy, a anamorficzna (bezpłciowa) forma wzrostu została początkowo nazwana T. mentagrophytes (Fréalle et al., 2007).
