Biegunki ostre są jednym z częstych objawów w praktyce weterynaryjnej małych zwierząt. Tło może być różne, zarówno zakaźne, pasożytnicze, jak i niezakaźne, związane ze spożyciem różnych substancji czy połknięciem ciała obcego. Największe ryzyko zejść śmiertelnych objaw ten stanowi u szczeniąt i kociąt. W przypadku ostrych biegunek ważna jest szybka diagnostyka różnicowa i umiejętność oszacowania, czy biegunka zagraża życiu zwierzęcia.

Abstract
Acute diarrhea is one of the common symptoms in the veterinary practice of small animals. The background is various: either infectious and parasitic or non-infectious which can be associated with ingestion of various substances or swallowing a foreign body. The greatest risk of the fatal course of the disease might apply to puppies and kittens. In the case of acute diarrheas rapid differential diagnosis is essential as well as an ability to assess whether it threatens the life of the animal.
