Karłowatość przysadkowa jest spowodowana całkowitym lub względnym niedoborem hormonu wzrostu. Typowym objawem jest karłowatość proporcjonalna. Schorzenie dotyczy głównie owczarków niemieckich, przypuszcza się, że przyczyną jest wada genetyczna, dziedziczona w sposób autosomalny recesywny. Diagnostyka choroby obejmuje badanie kliniczne, rentgenologiczne, pomiar stężenia IGF-1, test z ksylazyną, badanie z użyciem rezonansu magnetycznego (MRI) lub tomografii komputerowej (CT). W artykule opisano objawy kliniczne, metody diagnostyczne i możliwości leczenia choroby.

Abstract
Pituitary dwarfism is caused by an absolute or relative lack of growth hormone. The typical clinical symptom of the disease is proportionate dwarfism. The condition occurs mainly in German Shepherd and is thought to be due to an inherited autosomal recessive gene. Diagnosis consists in clinical and radiological examination, measurement of IGF-I, xylazine stimulation test, use of magnetic resonance (MR) or computed tomography. The paper describes clinical symptoms accompanying the disease, diagnostic methods and therapeutic options.
