Przypadki połknięcia ciał obcych w codziennej praktyce małych zwierząt zdarzają się dość często. Rodzaj i nasilenie objawów klinicznych zależą w głównej mierze od stopnia niedrożności powstającej w obrębie przewodu pokarmowego pacjenta. Najwięcej trudności diagnostycznych towarzyszy zazwyczaj sytuacjom, kiedy ciało obce lokalizuje się w żołądku. Często objawy są wówczas mało specyficzne, okresowe lub nie występują wcale. Bardzo ważnym elementem w procesie diagnostycznym w przypadku podejrzenia obecności ciała obcego jest dobrze przeprowadzony wywiad.
