Streszczenie
Senior jest to popularna nazwa psa powyżej 6.-7. roku życia, a osobnik geriatryczny to bardzo stare zwierzę, w ostatniej fazie życia, w której wzrasta ryzyko zapadalności na choroby. Przyjmuje się, że maksymalna długość życia jest odwrotnie proporcjonalna do wielkości. Skutki starzenia się można podzielić na dwie grupy: metaboliczne, związane ze zmniejszeniem zapotrzebowania energetycznego, i kliniczne, będące wynikiem zmniejszonego wydzielania enzymów, spadku elastyczności płuc i ich pojemności życiowej, spadku masy nerek i pojemności minutowej serca. Dla starzejącego się psa charakterystyczne są również zmiany behawioralne, będące wynikiem bezpośredniego wpływu starzenia na pracę mózgu.

Abstract
Dogs above 6 years of age are popularly called senior dogs. A geriatric dog is an animal in his last stage of life, associated with a higher risk of disease development. The maximum life span is supposed to be inversely related to the dog’s size. Effects of ageing can be classified into two groups: metabolic, associated with lower energy requirements, and clinical, accompanied by lower enzyme excretion, lung elasticity and capacity reduction, kidney weight loss and cardiac output decrease. Ageing also affects brain functions thus inducing behavioral changes characteristic of senior dogs.
