Żelazo jest niezbędnym składnikiem diety psów i kotów, podlegającym w organizmie obiegowi zamkniętemu. Podstawową funkcją żelaza jest budowa hemoglobiny, która też jest jego głównym rezerwuarem. Wiedza na temat zapotrzebowania na ten pierwiastek oraz umiejętność kontroli jego zawartości w organizmie, zabezpieczają zwierzę zarówno przed niedoborem, jak i nadmiarem, które mają określone konsekwencje zdrowotne.
