Streszczenie
Międzynarodowe Stowarzyszenie Badań nad Bólem (IASP) określiło ból jako „nieprzyjemne doświadczenie zmysłowe i emocjonalne, związane z rzeczywistym lub potencjalnym uszkodzeniem tkanek lub opisywane w kategoriach takiego wyobrażenia”. W tym samym dokumencie określono, że „niezdolność do komunikowania się w żaden sposób nie neguje możliwości, że dana osoba jest zdolna do odczuwania bólu i wymaga odpowiedniego przeciwbólowego leczenia”. Jest to bardzo ważne dla lekarzy weterynarii, gdyż nasi pacjenci nie są w stanie opisać bólu i jego nasilenia.

Abstract
The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) described pain as „an unpleasant sensual and emotional experience connected with real or potential damage of tissue or described in a category of imagination of such situation”. In this document it is also stated that „inability to communicate does not exclude, that a person is able to feel pain and does not need a suitable analgesic therapy”. Such understanding of a patient’s status is very important for veterinary surgeons because our patients are not able to describe pain and its intensity.
