W artykule dotyczącym warunków życia kotów domowych opublikowanym w numerze 2/2015 „VetPersonelu” pojęcie dobrostanu zostało opisane jako koncepcja pięciu wolności. Takie ujęcie jest uniwersalne dla wszystkich zwierząt znajdujących się pod opieką człowieka, dlatego również artykuł poświęcony psom będzie się na nim opierał.
Dobrostan można określić na podstawie średniej ze stopnia zrealizowania poniższych wolności:
- wolności od głodu i pragnienia,
- wolności od dyskomfortu,
- wolności od bólu, urazów i chorób,
- wolności realizacji naturalnych zachowań,
- wolności od lęku i stresu.
Odwołują się one do konieczności zaspokojenia potrzeb zwierzęcia.
Podstawowe, nieelastyczne potrzeby zwierząt to:
- potrzeba bezpieczeństwa,
- odżywianie się,
- sen,
- pielęgnacja ciała.
Potrzeby elastyczne, których zaspokojenie nie jest niezbędne do funkcjonowania organizmu, ale jego brak znacząco obniża komfort życia, to:
- ruch,
- zabawa,
- rozmnażanie się.
