Streszczenie
Ksylitol jest związkiem o budowie cukrowej, który charakteryzuje się niskim indeksem glikemicznym oraz w niewielkim stopniu powoduje wzrost stężenia glukozy we krwi. Te właściwości powodują, że związek ten obecnie jest powszechnie stosowany w przemyśle spożywczym do produkcji żywności dla diabetyków oraz ze względu na korzystne właściwości do redukcji mikroflory bakteryjnej w jamie ustnej, do produkcji gum bez cukru czy past do zębów. Podczas gdy związek ten jest nietoksyczny dla ludzi, u psów powoduje silne zatrucie. W zależności od dawki powoduje on hipoglikemię oraz niewydolność wątroby. Leczenie zatrucia ksylitolem u psów sprowadza się do przeciwdziałania hipoglikemii oraz leczenia wspomagającego wątrobę.

Abstract
Xylitol has a sugar-like structure and is characterised by a low glycemic index, thus evoking only a slight increase in the blood glucose level. Owing to those properties the substance is now commonly used as an artificial sweetener in food for diabetics. Because of its ability to reduce bacterial microflora in the oral cavity xylitol is used in products like sugar-free gum or toothpaste. While the substance is not toxic to humans, it causes severe intoxication in dogs. Depending on the dosage it can cause hypoglycaemia and hepatic failure.
