Streszczenie
Wścieklizna jest śmiertelną chorobą neurologiczną, zoonozą, której czynnikiem etiologicznym jest wirus należący do rodzaju Lyssavirus rodziny Rhabdoviridae. Choroba stwierdzana jest u zwierząt stałocieplnych na całym świecie, poza odizolowanymi wyspami, jak Australia czy Antarktyda. Szerzy się w następstwie pokąsania osobnika wrażliwego przez zakażonego. Znaczne ilości wirusa wydalane są ze śliną chorych zwierząt. Okres inkubacji choroby waha się od 2 tygodni do 6 lat (średnio 2-3 miesiące). Z uwagi na fakt, że wścieklizna uznawana jest za najważniejszą zoonozę, by móc podjąć odpowiednie środki celem zapobiegania rozwojowi choroby i jej zwalczenia, konieczna jest jej właściwa diagnostyka.

Abstract
Rabies
is a zoonotic, fatal and progressive neurological infection caused by
rabies virus of the genus Lyssavirus and family Rhabdoviridae. Affecting
all warm-blooded animals, the disease is prevalent throughout the world
and endemic in many countries except in islands like Australia and
Antarctica. A bite of rabid animals and saliva of infected host are
mainly responsible for virus transmission. The incubation period is
highly variable from 2 weeks to 6 years (avg. 2-3 months). Being a major
zoonosis, precise and rapid diagnosis is important for early treatment,
effective prevention and control measures.
