Najkrótsza definicja wstrząsu podana przez EISCM to nagły i głęboki spadek ciśnienia krwi, mogący mieć poważne konsekwencje dla życiowo istotnych narządów (nerek, płuc i wątroby). Stan wstrząsu jest początkowo odwracalny, ale należy go natychmiast rozpoznać i leczyć, aby zapobiegać progresji do nieodwracalnej dysfunkcji narządowej. Znajomość objawów rozwijającego się wstrząsu i postępowania w jego przebiegu jest jedną z najważniejszych umiejętności personelu zajmującego się pacjentami w stanach nagłych.

Abstract
According to The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (EISCM), shock is a sudden decrease of the blood pressure with serious consequences for the organs most important to survive (kidneys, lungs and liver). The shock state is reversible at the beggining, but it has to be diagnosed and treated immediatly, not allowing for the progression to irreversible organs dysfuction. The knowledge of how to recognize the developing shock symptoms is one of the most important abilities of the emergency veterinary staff.
