W obecnych czasach nadwaga i otyłość u psów i kotów stanowią poważny problem. Podstawy terapii to: prawidłowo dobrana niskokaloryczna dieta, zwiększona aktywność ruchowa oraz właściwe zrozumienie przez właściciela realnych potrzeb zwierzęcia. Pomiędzy odchudzaniem zwierzęcia a skutecznym odchudzaniem jest znaczna różnica, związana z długotrwałym utrzymaniem efektu spadku masy ciała.
