Ranking University Ranking by Academic Performance opiera się na sześciu wskaźnikach wyników akademickich. Podstawą metodologii rankingu są publikacje. Jako wskaźniki wykorzystuje się zarówno jakość, jak i ilość publikacji oraz wyniki międzynarodowej współpracy badawczej.
W rankingu sklasyfikowano 3 000 uczelni. Oznacza to, że URAP obejmuje swoim zasięgiem około 12% wszystkich uczelni na świecie, co czyni go jednym z najbardziej kompleksowych systemów rankingowych uniwersytetów na świecie.
