Streszczenie
Selen jest pierwiastkiem śladowym, który spełnia szereg funkcji w organizmach żywych, m.in. jest składnikiem wielu enzymów kontrolujących szlaki metaboliczne, bierze również udział w metabolizmie hormonów tarczycy, kontroluje funkcje rozrodcze i działa neuroprotekcyjnie. Najczęściej stosowaną formą suplementacji są domięśniowe iniekcje preparatów zawierających selenian sodu. Inną formą suplementacji tego pierwiastka jest stosowanie długo działających preparatów, takich jak selenian baru.

Abstract
Selen is a trace element, which has a lot of functions in the body, e.g. it is a component of many enzymes which control metabolic routes, influence thyroid hormones metabolism, control reproductive functions and have a neuroprotective values. The most common form of selen supplementation is intramuscular injections of sodium selenite. Other form of supplementation is using long-acting preparations such as barium selenate.
