Zapalenie gruczołu mlekowego, czyli mastitis, jest to jedna z najdroższych chorób występujących u bydła mlecznego. Prowadzi ona do znacznych strat ekonomicznych, związanych ze spadkiem produkcji mleka, kosztami leczenia, jak również znacząco wpływa na zwiększenie ryzyka brakowania takich zwierząt ze stada.
