Streszczenie
Tężec jest niezaraźliwą chorobą zakaźną powodowaną przez egzotoksyny produkowane przez Clostridium tetani. Pomimo że choroba została poznana już wieki temu, wciąż stanowi poważne wyzwanie dla lekarzy weterynarii. Konie są szczególnie wrażliwe na działanie toksyny tężcowej, a wskaźnik śmiertelności u tego gatunku jest bardzo wysoki. Wczesne rozpoznanie i wdrożenie leczenia są kluczowe w celu zapewnienia lepszego rokowania na przeżycie. Najważniejszym elementem w walce z tężcem jest prewencja, a jej najistotniejszą częścią − czynna immunoprofilaktyka w formie corocznych szczepień.

Abstract
Tetanus is a non-contagious infectious disease caused by exotoxins produced by Clostridium tetani. Although the disease is already known for centuries it still poses a real challenge for veterinarians. Horses are particularly vulnerable to the effect of tetanus toxin and the mortality rate in this species is very high. Early diagnosis and fast implementation of treatment are the key factors to provide better prognosis of survival. The most important aspect of managing tetanus is prevention and its most significant part − active immunoprophylaxis in the form of annual vaccinations.
