Ryzyko wczesnego zalegania krowy po porodzie może pojawić się jako wypadkowa szeregu zaburzeń mineralnych i metabolicznych, często związanych z obniżeniem stężenia wapnia, które ogniskują się w momencie rozpoczęcia laktacji. Jednak geneza tych zaburzeń może pojawiać się jeszcze w okresie zasuszenia i zależy od szeregu interakcji między składnikami pokarmowymi.
